Gerald was born and raised in Belfast, Northern Ireland, and emigrated to Australia with his family when he was 16. He started acting while at university in Australia and spent 3 years as an actor/teacher before moving to London to study at the Drama Studio.
Since then he has had a wide and varied career: on the big screen he played Tessek - Squid Head and the Mon Calamari Officer in Star Wars: Episode VI - RETURN OF THE JEDI, and was a puppeteer on LITTLE SHOP OF HORRORS.
His many TV appearances include CASUALTY, SCARLET AND BLACK, JENNY’S WAR, KEEPING MUM, HARRY'S MAD, TIME GENTLEMEN PLEASE, and two series of THE BOOT STREET BAND. He also worked on SPITTING IMAGE as a puppeteer.
In the West End of London he appeared in THE BLUE ANGEL for the Royal Shakespeare Company at the Gielgud Theatre, in THE ARABIAN NIGHTS at the Arts Theatre and for a year in the farce NO SEX PLEASE - WE’RE BRITISH at the Strand Theatre. Other theatre work includes A CHRISTMAS CAROL in Oxford, THE WIZARD OF OZ in Exeter and national tours of DREAMS OF ANNE FRANK, SALAD DAYS and BELL,
BOOK & CANDLE.
In Wimbledon, London, where he lives, he has appeared in A MIDSUMMER NIGHT’S DREAM, ALICE IN WONDERLAND and in 10 plays at the Polka Theatre. Favourite roles at Polka include Dr. Livesey in TREASURE ISLAND and Moriarty in a new Sherlock Holmes play written by Philip Pullman.
He is still probably best known to many people as the original Mr. Muscle in the long-running series of TV commercials which were shown throughout Europe and as far away as South Africa, Australia and New Zealand. Voice work includes voice-overs and readings for BBC Radio.

Gerald has appeared at many conventions and shows, meeting lots of Star Wars fans around the globe. He is an Honorary Member of several fan groups, including the 501st Legion and the Rebel Legion, the Jedi Outcasts of Italy, Holored Estelar Seville, and the Bydgoski Fanklub in Poland. He has also been made an Honorary Jedi Master by the Jedi Knights of Cleveland, is "Godfather" to L'Alliance Impériale in Quebec, Canada, and is a Senator on the Knights of the Empire (KOTE) Imperial Senate in the UK.
He has his own club in Spain - The CalamariMen Club, in appreciation of the two characters he played in Return Of The Jedi, and in 2007, he narrated a 30th anniversary concert of Star Wars music, in Spanish, in Valencia, for charity.
He is Honorary Ambassador of the Star Wars Outer Rim Alliance (SWORA), an international alliance of many Star Wars fan groups from all around the world, which he co-founded in 2008.
